THE CUSTOMER
The customer is a company that owns several scientific research vessels and operates in the marine sector.
THE NEED
During a detailed measurement campaign on a scientific research vessel, equipped with highly sensitive instruments, a significant ‘notching’ problem was found in the voltage sine wave.
This phenomenon, caused by the power electronics (SCR) used to drive the propulsion motors, posed a direct threat to the vessel’s operational stability.
OUR SOLUTION
The analysis of the on-board system was carried out by one of our Dutch partners dealing with power quality and energy saving, who, after discussions with Ortea’s experts, identified the installation of 2 inductors in series upstream of each motor as the solution to the customer’s problems.
These reactors, which being directly connected to the thyristor drives (SCR) will suffer a strong current distortion, follow the specifications provided by the customer and are manufactured in accordance with RINA regulations for the marine sector.
The 5 reactors (2 for each motor plus 1 spare) required to solve the problem on board the vessel have the following main technical characteristics:
- Power: 60kVA
- Inductance: 0.05mH ±10%
- Rated current: 1000A
- Peak current: 1500A
- Insulation level: AC 3×1′
- Frequency: 60Hz
- Weight: 210kg
These solutions, designed for harsh environments such as marine, emphasise Ortea’s commitment to providing solutions that not only solve immediate problems, but also improve energy efficiency and long-term operational sustainability.
