The customer is a large Italian industrial forging company.
THE NEED
The customer’s need was to improve the efficiency and power quality of its plant, specifically a large mechanical press.
OUR SOLUTION
Ortea, having considered and analysed the customer’s requirements, has commissioned a 1500kvar ICAR MULTImatic FD25/S power factor correction unit. The new switchgear is used to rephase one of the largest presses in Italy (16,000ton), and complements a 1200kvar MULTImatic FD25/S that rephases the manipulator (capable of handling parts up to 100ton).
The press and manipulator are very fast, but the two switchboards are able to rephase them promptly thanks to the thyristor static inserters: together, they are able to deliver almost 4000A in less than 100ms, and without generating troublesome transients for the system.
Thanks to this important power factor correction, the transformers supplying this section of the plant (4x3150kVA) are relieved of the ‘effort’ of carrying all the inductive reactive power needed by the motors on board the press and manipulator, and this reduces their thermal and mechanical stress.
The indestructible bimetallised paper capacitors that equip the two switchboards have also proved their worth in this ‘heavy industry’ environment.
