High-efficiency isolation transformers features: the example of a data centre in South-East Asia

Ortea recently successfully completed a major project for a customer in the data center sector located in South East Asia. The company supplied a total of 12 isolation transformers, divided into four 150 kVA Dyn11 K4 transformers and eight 75 kVA Dyn11 K4 transformers. The transformers were designed to meet the security and reliability requirements of the data center, integrating advanced solutions that guarantee optimum performance.

Below we analyse the main characteristics of the transformers supplied, which comply with the challenging technical specifications required by the customer.

Energy Efficiency (Efficiency >98%): reduced operating costs

Although the power supply system of Data Centers is usually redundant (i.e. there are several oversized transformers in parallel to increase system safety) the isolation transformers supplied by Ortea are designed to reduce losses as much as possible.

A low current density in the windings, the choice of using a grain-oriented core plate and a low induction value, together with the use of high-quality materials and an optimised design, have resulted in an efficiency of over 98%.

The installation of transformers with these characteristics has also significantly reduced system operating noise and mechanical vibrations, contributing to a longer operating life and lower maintenance costs.

Neutral directly connected to earth: stability and safety

Transformers supplied by Ortea include a key feature: the neutral connected directly to earth. This configuration stabilises the phase voltages in the secondary, minimising the effects of current imbalance. Thanks to this design choice, the customer was able to count on a more stable electrical system, minimising the risk of outages and improving the operational reliability of the data center.

Double shield (or reinforced shield) to earth: protection from harmonics and lightning

Another essential aspect of the transformers supplied by Ortea is the double ground shield, which acts as a filter for high-frequency harmonics. This solution allowed the customer to avoid the transfer of disturbances between primary and secondary, thus protecting the delicate electronic systems in the data center. Furthermore, in the event of external lightning strikes, the double shield helps to attenuate voltage pulses, providing an additional level of protection against possible overvoltages.

Nomex insulation: increased security

To further increase the safety of the data center, Ortea chose to equip its isolation transformers with Nomex insulation material. This material is known for its fire resistance, and its application in the transformers supplied has minimised the risk of fire, a critical factor for the customer requiring business continuity in a highly secure environment.

Earthquake protection: safety in seismic Areas

Being located in a highly seismic area of South-East Asia, the data center required solutions that would guarantee resistance to earthquakes. The transformers supplied by Ortea were equipped with seismic feet, offering effective protection against earthquakes, safeguarding the integrity of the power system and ensuring the continuity of operations even under extreme conditions.

Factory acceptance test (F.A.T.) online

A key element of the project was the execution of the Factory Acceptance Test (F.A.T.) online with the customer. This made it possible to verify the performance of the transformers in real time and ensure that they met all the required specifications. The success of the test confirmed the quality of the products supplied and fully met the customer’s expectations.

Accessories for transformer maintenance and safety

Transformers supplied by Ortea have been equipped with a range of accessories to further enhance maintenance and operational safety:

  • Control unit + PT100 probes: for continuous temperature monitoring, essential to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Side fans: to maintain adequate ventilation, preventing overheating during operation.
  • LED lamps: to provide illumination during maintenance operations, improving visibility and safety.
  • Bimetallic sheet: to provide additional mechanical protection.

Ortea’s successful case study for the supply of isolation transformers for a data center in South East Asia demonstrates the high quality and effectiveness of its solutions. With a focus on safety, energy efficiency and protection from external stress, Ortea provided a power supply system that fully met the customer’s requirements, ensuring optimal performance and a long service life.
